The international Grammy Artist, Shakila, began her career when she was invited to perform on a major television show. It is here that she caught the attention of numerous producers that wanted to transition her into a professional artist. Though Shakila so eagerly wanted to become a star, she made sure to focus on her education, and limited her performances to talent shows and school competitions.

Through hard work and determination, she completed her studies and ultimately succeeded in becoming a professional performer in 1990, releasing her first Persian hit album. An official Grammy voting member, Shakila has won the Persian International Artist Award, and has already released over twenty Persian albums. Now in 2015 she releases her full-length English album “11:11 City of love”, after having released multiple English-language singles since 2012.

The “11:11 City of love” album is quite diverse and different, while being euphoric and bold. It’s a real soulful collection of adult-orientated pop gems that’s more nuanced and better crafted than most modern pop.  The grace and fluidity that arises from Shakila’s voice is also incredible throughout. From the moment she opens the album with If You Distance Your Self you will love her breathy power, and deep, pure and powerful delivery, as well as the sublime and grounded personality she exudes.

Shakila’s tones blend into the hooks and crescendos like instruments joining to harmonics in a fine world class symphony. There may be more than one potential radio hit in the bunch, but the whole album itself is one joyous triumph followed by another. It’s an album you will want to listen to, straight through over and over again.

Songs like the EDM-induced When I Close My Eyes display Shakila’s sophisticated and controlled vocals. While the luscious, rich and exotic rhythms of Teach Hate How To Love Again  plays as a perfect backdrop to her consistently uplifting lyrics and gorgeous voice.

Both the original and the piano versions of Pledge for Peace  is a reminder that our faith in people can and should be restored if we are to find peace in this restless world. The combination of Shakila’s amazingly powerful, beautiful voice with the catchiness of all the tunes makes for multiple moments of enjoyment on this album. To be honest even the instrumental an ethnic based tracks add shades of sheer pleasure to an album which is truly ‘global’ in its presentation and execution.

“11:11 City of love” is truly a wonderful album. I should not be surprised but I am amazed by her talent. Every song brings a new layer and freshness. They are all very empowering and moving and Shakila’s vocals are unbelievable especially on City Of Love which has a grand Broadway musical feel about it, perfectly adapted to her classy big voice. It’s clear that Shakila is here to stay and continues to develop her success with each album.
